Pistolo: Te formaste en el mundo universitario europeo. Estudiaste filosofía en Holanda, donde impartiste clases de meditación trascendental. Después regresaste a la India. Actualmente eres profesor de sánscrito y yoga en Rishikesh. El hecho de haber profundizado en dos tradiciones de pensamiento tan distintas como la oriental y la occidental te debe haber dado una cierta perspectiva con respecto a cada una de ellas. Empecemos por el arte, ¿cuál crees que es la diferencia básica entre ambas culturas a la hora de entender el arte?
Brahmachari: En nuestra cultura el concepto de arte todavía está vinculado a la naturaleza y a la divinidad. Tomemos como ejemplo la música. En oriente tenemos unas piezas musicales que se llaman ragas. Algunas ragas se asocian con un momento determinado del día. De este modo, un músico, cuando interpreta la raga de la mañana, debe tener en cuenta que el acto de tocar no comporta una actividad estrictamente musical; sino que, además, está realizando una plegaria al sol y a la mañana. Por otro lado, las ragas contienen una estructura básica en lo que se refiere a ritmo y melodía; pero su desarrollo siempre es libre y abierto a la creatividad. Otra de las características que define nuestramúsica es que no tenemos partituras, por lo que transmitimos el conocimiento musical de forma personal: de maestro a discípulo. En cambio, en occidente nos encontramos con la situación inversa: los músicos deben interpretar partituras ya escritas, ciñéndose al máximo a la trascripción musical. En vuestra música clásica no hay lugar para la improvisación. Cada pieza es una obra cerrada. Sus interpretaciones varían muy poco. En este sentido, la aportación creativa que se le permite al músico es menor.
¿Qué vinculación existe desde tu punto de vista entre el mundo del arte y las disciplinas orientales de introspección como el yoga?
En mi trabajo mucho. Yo me dedico a investigar sobre la existencia. Es-tudio las formaciones de esas estructuras a las que llamamos realidad.
Pero abordar el misterio de la vida es una labor muy difícil, porque al hacerlo, estamos intentando aproximarnos a una esencia absoluta, que se muestra a nuestros ojos como un fenómeno que tiene infinidad de manifestaciones. Es justamente este naturaleza múltiple de la realidad la que me obliga a valerme de distintas disciplinas en mi estudio. A la hora de investigar me valgo tanto de las ciencias occidentales como de las técnicas de introspección orientales, ya que cada disciplina cog-noscitiva aporta un nuevo punto de vista. Para explicarlo en forma de metáfora, te diría que lo real irradia una luz cegadora. Nosotros, para poder verla, la filtramos con prismas. Los colores resultantes se proyectan sobre las múltiples manifestaciones de la vida. Cada color tiñe una rama distinta del conocimiento. Por tanto, aunque cada ciencia nos parezca distinta, no por ello debemos de olvidar que todas están coloreadas por la misma luz.
Mucha gente cree que el esquema de pensamiento que generó la última revolución científica del XIX -que especializó las disciplinas hasta casi eliminar el diálogo entre las ciencias- ha entrado en crisis. El final de la Posmodernidad, pues, significará una vuelta a un ideal más humanista. De alguna forma, se difuminarán las barreras que separaban a científicos y creadores...
Estoy completamente de acuerdo. Los físicos cuánticos trabajan con partículas tan pequeñas que no podemos observar ni con microscopio pero que verifican experimentalmente. Son verdaderos filósofos que nos explican que en su mundo la objetividad no existe. Los objetos no están aquí ni allí, sino en los dos sitios a la vez. Los matemáticos, por su parte, buscan la comprensión de la forma que puede tener el universo a través del estudio de la geometría de los espacios multidimensionales.
Tanto unos como otros funcionan con principios abstractos propios de la metafísica, lo que nos demuestra que cuando una disciplina cognoscitiva profundiza al máximo acaba traspasando sus propios límites e invadiendo el terreno que en un principio parecía que pertenecía a otrarama del conocimiento... Da la sensación de que de alguna forma estamos volviendo a los albores de la ciencia, a la Grecia Antigua, cuando los mejores matemáticos, astrónomos y biólogos eran filósofos...

Pistolo: You were educated at European universities. You read Philosophy in Holland, where you taught transcendental meditation. Then you went back to India. At the present time you teach Sanskrit and yoga at Rishikesh. The fact that you delved into two such different traditions of thought as the oriental and the occidental must have given you a certain perspective about each of them. Let us begin with art: what do you think is the basic difference between both cultures' ways of seeing art?
Brahmachari: In our culture the concept of art is still linked to nature and divinity. Let's take music as an example. In the East we have musical pieces called ragas. Some ragas are associated with one particular time of the day. In this way, when a musician plays a raga in the morning, he must take it into account that the act of playing isn't strictly speaking musical activity, but that it is a prayer to the sun and the morning. On the other hand, ragas have a basic structure as regards rhythm and melody; but their development is free and open for creativity. Another of the characteristics that define our music is that we don't have written scores, so we transmit musical knowledge from person to person: from master to disciple. In the West, however we find the opposite situation: musicians must interpret written scores and keep as closely as possible to the musical transcription. In your classical music there is no roomfor improvisation. Each piece is a closed work. Interpretations vary little.
The musician is not allowed to make a creative contribution.
What link is there, in your opinion, between the art world and Oriental introspection disciplines like yoga?
A great deal in my work. I do research into life. I study the formations of those structures that we call reality. But addressing the mystery of life is a very difficult task, because on doing so, we are attempting to approach an absolute essence, which appears before our eyes as a phenomenon that has infinite manifestations. It is precisely this multiple nature of reality that makes me use different disciplines in my studies. To perform my research I use both Occidental sciences and Oriental introspection techniques, since each cognitive discipline provides a new viewpoint. To explain it by using a metaphor, I would say the real irradiates blinding light. In order for us to see it, we filter it through prisms. The colours that emerge are projected on the multiple manifestations of life. Each colour tints a different branch of knowledge. Therefore, although each science seems different to us, we must not forget that they are all tinted with the same light.
Many people think that after the last scientific revolution in the 19th century -which led to such specialisation of disciplines that it almost did away with the dialogue between the sciences- the end of Post-Modernity would bring about a return to a more humanistic ideal. That the barriers between scientists and artists would somehow be removed…
I quite agree. Quantum physicists work with such tiny particles that we cannot see them even through a microscope but they verify them experimentally. They are actual philosophers who explain to us that in their world there is no such thing as objectivity. Objects are not here or there, but in both places at the same time. For their part, mathematicians endeavour to understand the shape of the universe by studying the geometry of multidimensional spaces. They both work with the abstract principles of metaphysics, which shows that when a cognitive discipline goes as far as possible it ends up going beyond its own limits and invading the terrain that in principle seemed to belong to another field of knowledge… It looks as though we are somehow going back to the genesis of science, in Ancient Greece, when the best mathematicians, astronomers and biologists were philosophers…
